Thesis — as part of the graduation

Book

2011

160 x 230 mm

For my thesis I did research in the way new media influences graphic design, the design is based on the continuous stream of information which is distinctive for the term 'new media'.

Captain Cooks Journey
First Voyage Around The World

Book

2010

160 x 220 mm

Project Gutenberg (gutenberg.org) is the place where you can download over 33,000 free eBooks to read on your computer, no fee or registration is required. The eBooks were previously published by bona fide publishers and digitized with the help of thousands of volunteers. I translated the journey of Captain Cook into a new book after my interpretation. The manuscript contains a lot of lists and maps which I redesigned into a modern entity.

Museum Index Play Van Abbe 3

Exhibition

2010

During my internship at studio Joost Grootens (Amsterdam) I collaborated on a plotter cut infographic for the Van Abbemuseum, based in Eindhoven. The infographic is showing the number of male and female artists and collectives in the collection of the Van Abbemuseum. Presented in the exhibition The Politics of Collecting: The Collecting of Politics, Play Van Abbe 3.

The Typographic Voice: Exhibition

Exhibition

2010

The exhibition showcases the work that was created within The Typographic Voice Minor at ArtEZ Institute of Arts, Arnhem. The exhibition was hosted by Onomatopee, Eindhoven.

The Typographic Voice

Poster

2010

420 x 594 mm

A series of posters I made during the ArtEZ Conceptual Type minor. During the research phase of a project, we don't design. We just try to build 'vocabulary' of the project, each sketch or idea embodying a new 'word'. The richer the words, the more elegant the sentences we speak.

woon–/slaapk.

Poster

2010

594 x 841 mm

This project was aimed to translate a space towards a typographic representation of my room. I made an overview out of glyphs of the Akkurat Mono typeface.

Tirza

Poster

2010

594 x 841 mm

A theatre poster for the play Tirza, based on the book of Arnon Grunberg.

Fairbanks — Nuevo Laredo 7.296 km

Zine

2010

148 x 210 mm

Nowadays it is possible to travel digitally. I made a virtual journey alongside the Pan American Highway, from Fairbanks (AK) to Nuevo Laredo (MEX) through webcams and virtual found information. In transit I came across a lot of roadsigns, these roadsigns resulted into a conceptual typeface.

Inspirerende Impulsen

Newspaper

2009

297,4 x 431,8 mm

The project was about finding out the conception behind the SMBA invitation cards, which are made by Mevis & Van Deursen. The final product already exists, I contacted all the artists involving the cards. Therefore I created a opposite working method, trying to reconstruct the designing process.

MPAA

Newspaper

2009

297,4 x 431,8 mm

A newspaper based on the Motion Picture Association of America, a film rating system. The MPAA system has been criticized for the secrecy of it's decisions as well as for perceived inconsistencies. Subject of criticism is the uneven emphasis on sex versus violence. I translated the controversial rating system to a newspaper, where photos of The Daily Harald are "rated" from PG to NC-17.

Conversation

Poster

2009

841 x 1189 mm

A poster based on large commercial posters. I imagined a shopping street with a lot of pedestrians walking through. I tried to make a subliminal message to trigger the subconscious mind, by recording myself saying the word 'buy'.

Hidden Cities

Book

2008

190 x 260 mm

In chapter "1. Hidden Cities", by Italo Calvino, the city Olinda is described by Marco Polo as "a city that starts with a circle and grows by repeatingly adding circles like tree rings." With this idea in mind, I created a robot that would visualize this growth.

Method

Poster

2008

594 x 841 mm

Exhibition poster for the project 'Method' by Dick Raaijmakers.

Social Network

Poster

2008

500 x 700 mm

The poster shows all the people I know, from 1985 until 2008. Every small multiple contains personal information about a person I know.

Olafur Eliasson: Take your time

Poster

2008

841 x 1189 mm

A fictional exhibition poster.

Pecunia Non Olet

Poster

2008

594 x 841 mm

"Money doesn't stink." Code for the takeover negotiations of Dutch bank Fortis, by the Dutch state. A poster based on a construction ad which symbolizes the affair.

Spam Poetry

Zine

2007

148 x 210 mm

A zine based on typesetting. Movable type is composed on a composing stick by hand. The form was mounted in a press, inked and an impression was made on paper.
